Signs your brick needs repointing
- Mortar that's sandy, recessed or falling out of the joints
- Damp patches, white staining (efflorescence) or moss on the brick face
- Spalled or cracked bricks near downspouts and caps
- Gaps around chimney flashing or window sills
Repointing vs. tuckpointing
Repointing removes failed mortar to a sound depth and refills the joint. Tuckpointing adds a fine contrasting line over a colour-matched joint for a crisp, traditional finish. We'll tell you which suits your wall, and we never use mortar harder than the brick. Hard modern mortar on older, softer brick is a common cause of damage.
Heritage brick in Victoria and Oak Bay
Many of Greater Victoria's character homes were built with soft brick and lime mortar. We do heritage masonry restoration with lime-based mortars and careful hand tools, so the brick can breathe and the wall keeps its original look.
